Lugnut Brand’s Funk/Soul
Trip through Time

Lugnut Brand Records was founded in 2011 by bass player Chris Lujan. Originally as an outlet to release his own music, but in the last few years, it evolved into also releasing music by other artists. Now the Pittsburg-based label includes over twenty records ranging from classic soul to afrobeat from Finland to funk from Russia.

Tracklib cherry-picked a bunch of Lugnut Brand’s tracks, including stems of The M-Tet which have never been released to the public before. The M-Tet has been Lujan’s main band for the past six years: “The M-Tet started off as a band that I put together to really study the tunes from The Meters. We all know that The Meters have been sampled a ton. So, we’ve always tried to bring that vibe along with us. So, I’m thinking, if you like to sample The Meters, The M-Tet has an untapped wealth of material just waiting for you.”

Lujan’s interest in sampling can be traced back to his primary school days. “I’ve been listening to hip-hop since I was in the third grade,” he says. “Run DMC was my group. I’ll be 45 years old this year. So, I was right in it when it was happening. Beastie Boys hit when I was in the sixth grade. But, De La Soul will always be my favorite hip-hop group. Mos Def, Talib Kweli… That’s my era of hip-hop. But as far as sampling goes, I love what Jurassic 5 does with their music.” In a way, Lugnut Brand’s releases hint his old love for hip-hop in reverse. Lujan: “A lot of our outros will just be straight-up drum breaks.”

Lugnut Brand traces funk and soul throughout time: from The Incredible Say Whats! recreating a 45 from 1968 by a band called Soul Machine, to The M-Tet’s fascination for the heavy-hitters of The Meters, all the way up to new music by bands abroad: Princes of Nigeria (Finland) and The Vicious Seeds (Russia). Lujan: “Both of those bands found me the old fashioned way. Well, maybe the new old-fashioned way. They somehow found out about my little label and hit me up with some music.”

"The fact that there’s a service for producers who are looking for something to sample that isn’t your run-of-the-mill track that’s already been sampled a million times, is a win in my book.”

The exclusive free download of “Reminiscing” goes all the way back to day one for Lugnut Brand Records: it was Lujan’s first project and the label’s very first 45. That combined with the never-before-heard stems of The M-Tet, makes a full-circle with sampling. Lujan: “The fact that there’s a service for producers who are looking for something to sample that isn’t your run-of-the-mill track that’s already been sampled a million times, is a win in my book.”
