Made With Tracklib: L7NNON - Despertadores (Prod. Papatinho)

Based in Rio de Janeiro, Papatinho is one of Brazil's biggest hip-hop producers. He puts local emcees in the limelight with his own imprint, Papatunes Records. His group ConeCrewDiretoria reaches millions of listeners, and so does his aptly-titled 'Papasessions.' One of the recurring names in these series is rapper L7NNON. Their collaborative track ‘Despertadores’ was made around an obscure soul sample off Tracklib.

If even holy database Discogs doesn’t include much info, then it’s fairly safe to use ‘obscure’ as an adjective. Tuff City Records included “Black Blood (in the Mississippi Mud)" on a 2016 compilation of rare and unreissued Baton Rouge funk and soul from 1968 till 1974. It’s one of the two 7” records by Black Blood & The Chocolate Pickles (currently being sold for up to $300!), the alias of songwriter and producer Dr Valerian E. Smith. The track tells the story of the police shooting black students who were protesting at Jackson State in Mississippi, shortly after the May 4 massacre in 1970. The song has also been sampled before for music by XXXTentacion and Mac Miller.

“I didn’t know the track yet. I discovered it through Tracklib”, says producer Papatinho. “L7NNON was writing lyrics in my studio, and I needed something exciting to give life to his words. When I heard ‘Black Blood’, I knew that was all I needed. We finished the track that very same day. ‘Despertadores’ became the first track of my Papatunes label.”

L7NNON adds: “To me, ‘Despertadores’ means the awakening of my generation. That’s why the sample matched perfectly with my verse. I love samples: they evoke a feeling and add personality to beats.”

The use of “Black Blood (In The Mississippi Mud)” marks the start of a new phase in sampling for Papatinho: “The past few years, I felt a bit discouraged about the use of samples due to the difficulties with clearing and licensing. When I discovered Tracklib, I felt much safer and comfortable–it was a relief! [laughs] Now my passion for the art of sampling is back. There are even more tracks coming up soon including Tracklib samples.”
