Sample the Gritty, Warm & Soulful 'Tangible' by Nicole Bus & Wu10

Bonding over a love for vintage gear, soul singer and Def Jam signee Nicole Bus and producer Wu10 (Earth Wind & Fire, Mary J. Blige, Al Green, Musiq Soulchild & more) ended up creating ‘Tangible’ together. A collection of soul-infused songs with a gritty, warm sound, arising from their mutual analog love.

How did you end up working together?

Wu10: Nicole was already working with a good friend/producer, Cardiak. Cardiak brought me in a song, and I was really impressed by Nicole's vocal style and writing. Eventually, this led to us all working on more music. Nicole also had an idea to work [on music for sampling] together. Of course, that was a great idea!

Nicole Bus: When Cardiak introduced me to Wu10, we had our first Zoom which I recall was at least an hour chatting about music, vintage gear, and life. After this conversation, I knew I wanted to create more music with Wu10. It’s something that you can sense [in the music]: that instant click was there.

Can you describe that connection?

W: There’s definitely an automatic spiritual connection I have to Nicole’s voice and writing. What she does I feel is divinely inspired and I would like to think the same of what I do. It’s definitely organic and there’s evidence that there is musical ability beyond just singing when you hear her music.

N: Wu10 is a G.O.A.T. I know he won’t say it himself, but I grew up on his music. Wu10 created music for Raphael Saadiq, Anthony Hamilton, and Out of Eden. These are people that sonically molded my music. Not many people that I know heard of the gospel group Out of Eden. When Destiny’s Child and Out of Eden came out, I was like an ambassador for both groups in my country. So as a music geek, I feel honored to work with Wu10 and create music that inspires people.

Can you please take us through the writing and production process of ‘Tangible’?

W: Nicole initially asked me to start sending ideas with a few references. Her musical ability is vast, so it was pretty easy to just vibe on ideas and send them a bit unfinished to her. I knew she knew what to do once she heard them.

N: Wu10 has an equal if not more love for vintage instrumentation like I do. The creation of an out-of-the-box concept gives a very organic feeling and sound to music overall. Creating a sample pack with that feeling was something I really wanted to do. I’m happy we could create this gritty, warm soulful pack for other creators.

What was it like to work together?

W: Nicole is immediate fam! Like for real. It’s like I’ve worked with her before we actually started working. Definitely fluid and uncomplicated.

N: It’s indeed like we’ve known each other for years. There is no ego involved and that makes the creation process really pure and beautiful. I always try to channel my inner child and apply the wisdom of my years to the creation process. I believe Wu10 does the same. This creates a sense of laughter, calmness, and simplicity when creating. That’s truly a gift.

Keep digging
