The One-Second Loop on Derek Minor's 'Revenge'

Derek Minor is an emcee/producer from Nashville. All of his six albums reached Billboard charts numerous times, with #1 in the Top Christian chart as his highest listing. On his new track “Revenge” he reflects on the darker side of life and how faith comes into play, over a heavy beat with a Tracklib sample.

“Honestly, I rarely have an idea in mind when I’m digging for samples,” tells Derek Minor. “I look at sampling like those people who treasure hunt with metal detectors on the beach.” While treasure-hunting through Tracklib, it’s “Being Is More Than Life” by Baby Grandmothers which came up as a gem. All it took was a tiny bit from the iconic Swedish psych band. Listen at 03:09 in the song to hear it. Looping just a single second laid the entire groundwork for the beat of “Revenge.” A good discovery: producers like The Alchemist, Oh No and Quelle Chris previously sampled Baby Grandmothers as well.

Derek: “I felt soul. I felt emotion. I felt angst! These types of samples are the easiest to flip for me because they are so robust. The music is a conversation and I just look for the part that speaks to me most. I probably produced, wrote, and recorded the whole song in an hour and a half. I was feeling it that much! Usually, I make my best art when I’m not thinking and going entirely off of a vibe. This sample did it for me!”

While talking to the Reflection Music Group co-founder, it becomes clear that he now spreads the gospel of Tracklib as a new way to be creative. Another soon-to-be-released track samples Leisure Centre, an Australian band he discovered through Tracklib, who he’s even planning to collaborate with in the near future.

"Tracklib is a prayer answered. The ease of clearance and reasonable prices is going to reshape music."

— Derek Minor

So that one-second loop of Baby Grandmothers wasn’t only the spark for “Revenge”, it also changed his use of samples: “The problem was, as my career progressed, I realized how INSANE of a process it is to clear a sample. So I stopped sampling for a while. But Tracklib is a prayer answered. The ease of clearance and reasonable prices is going to reshape music. It’s also an excellent opportunity for undiscovered bands to have their music heard. Tracklib is expanding the creativity of the music space in ways we haven’t seen yet. And I’m very excited about that!”

Baby Grandmothers - 50 years later

But in 1968 they started working in new constellations and under other names. But after a 50 year hiatus, Baby Grandmothers actually reunited last year and released a new album called "Merkurius", which you can now also sample on Tracklib.
