BROCKHAMPTON - Dearly Departed

Shortly after the release of BROCKHAMPTON’s new album, Ginger, the track “Dearly Departed” made waves with its controversial topic. Kevin Abstract, Matt Champion and Dom McLennon share how they feel about parting with former group member and childhood friend, Ameer Vann. The backdrop for this blatantly honest track is a sample of a track by Swedish platinum-awarded producer Jimmy Ledrac.

Mary J. Blige - Know

The first solo track in two years from the “The Queen of Hip-Hop Soul.” An empowering track produced by Top Dawg stalwart Sounwave. "Know" is built around a rare soul track from the vaults of Tuff City Records. Mary J. Blige is currently on the Royalty Tour together with Nas till September 17th, promoting the upcoming release of her 14th studio album sometime later this year.

Vic Mensa - Let U Know

“Let U Know” serves as a big middle finger to everyone who didn’t believe in Vic Mensa. Together with producer Mike Dean and singer Jesse Rutherford he celebrates his success on the track. A sample of “New Day” by Band of Thieves adds a spark of soul near the end of the track. Vic Mensa: "When we were making the song Mike Dean had just introduced me to Tracklib. So we searched for samples in the same key we were working in and found HEAT. Tracklib is so ill because it’s like digging for dusty records, 45s & deep cuts."

Chubs - Zeppole Alla Vodka (Produced by Kimchi Sawce)

Let that track title sink in for a minute. Named after fried pizza dough, “Zeppole Alla Vodka” is a new track by New York-based emcee Chubs produced by Kimchi Sawce, who was born and raised in France but now resides in New York. The track is taken from last month’s debut album titled Silvio, stuffed with many other Italian treats such as “Lasagna Leftovers” and “Semolina Loaf.” Kimchi Sawce made it hot (pun intended) by sampling Sound Experience’s “Sha Na Na Na Boom Boom,” using previously unreleased stems from Philly Groove Records. Earlier this year, Kimchi Sawce took home the first prize during an edition of iStandard’s Sample Flip Saturday in New York.

RHINO - What U Gonna Do (ft. HYM)

Last month’s Roundup featured a hard track by hip-hop crew ASM, sampling an Asian folk track. This time ASM’s producer RHINO takes a whole other direction: sweet neo-soul with a flip of a 60s a capella song for the chorus. “What U Gonna Do” is part of an EP called The Leopard Dilemma, featuring four tracks with Tracklib samples.
