Children Of The Mushroom

Children Of The Mushroom

Children of the Mushroom were a California garage-psych band formed in 1967, emerging during the height of the West Coast psychedelic era. Their early sound was rooted in fuzz guitar, organ, garage rock energy and the exploratory spirit of late-1960s psychedelia.

As the decade progressed, the group began moving toward a heavier and more ambitious style. They shortened their name to Mushroom and gradually incorporated harder rock elements, reflecting the broader shift from garage and psychedelic music toward the emerging sounds of hard rock and progressive rock.

By 1970, the band had evolved again under the name Lady. This incarnation expanded their musical palette with progressive influences and additional instrumentation, including flute, while retaining the powerful organ-and-guitar foundation of their earlier work. Groups such as Jethro Tull became an important reference point as the band explored more complex arrangements and a broader dynamic range.

Across their different names and phases, Children of the Mushroom, Mushroom and Lady document the rapid evolution of California underground rock from garage-psych into heavier and more progressive territory.
