Dragonwyck
Dragonwyck were an American heavy psychedelic and progressive rock band formed in the Cleveland, Ohio area in the late 1960s by vocalist Bill Pettijohn and guitarist Tom Brehm. Emerging from earlier local groups, they developed a distinctive dark and atmospheric sound that combined late-60s psychedelia with heavy fuzz guitars, Hammond organ, Mellotron and early progressive rock elements.
In 1970, Dragonwyck recorded a self-titled demo album that was privately pressed in extremely limited quantities. Its dramatic, organ-driven sound and songs such as “Run To The Devil,” “Fire Climbs” and “Ancient Child” later made it a highly sought-after artifact among collectors of American underground psychedelia. A second set of recordings, later released as "Chapter 2", showed the band moving further into progressive territory, with richer arrangements and an increased use of Mellotron.
Although Dragonwyck never achieved commercial recognition during their original lifespan and dissolved in the mid-1970s, archival reissues eventually brought their music to a wider audience. Today, they are regarded as a cult example of the transition from late-60s psychedelia into the heavier progressive and proto-metal sounds of the early 1970s.
