Nelembe

Nelembe is the creation of musician and multi-instrumentalist Jorge Queijo. It began with a collection of spontaneously recorded drum rhythms stored on a hard drive. From these fragments, and during the height of the pandemic, Jorge Queijo crafted a musical concept that transcends borders and genres, seamlessly blending afrobeat and highlife while drawing from soul, funk, and jazz in a dynamic interplay. Beyond its rhythmic and sonic layers, afrobeat embodies a revolutionary and combative spirit—an unyielding fight for freedom and social justice. The powerful vocals of Daniel Belo and the intricate arrangements by saxophonist João Cabrita helped define what the band calls “dirty afrobeat”—a vibrant musical celebration where the only rule is the absence of rules, and the longing for freedom that only music can inspire.
