Soul Tunes, Brass Horns & Funk Breaks

With dinked 45s, funky breaks, and brass-heavy productions, the roots of Swedish record label Soul Tune are clearly grounded in soul and funk music. Backed by their own Soul Tune Allstars band, they’ve lately also been incorporating elements of Brazilian rhythms and Latin vibes into their music.

“Soul and funk music with a raw sound is the backbone of Soul Tune,” says label founder and musician Niclas Wretelid, “but I’m also very influenced by African music, Brazilian music, jazz, and folk. Even though my heart is with soul and funk, you can clearly hear other influences shine through from time to time. In the future we will continue to make music our way with other styles mixed in!” Take songs like “World” with Desmond Foster or “Latin Mama,” with indeed an evident touch of South American rhythms.

“World” was originally released as a now sold-out 45 with ”Natural Feeling” on the B-side. “I see ‘Natural Feeling’ sampled for a more uptempo 808-heavy soul track with a singer,” adds Niclas.

Both songs are credited to Soul Tune Allstars, the namesake band of the label. “Soul Tune Allstars is basically me writing songs, and then reaching out to a bunch of long-time musician friends, helping me to put the music together. I play several instruments such as bass, drums, and keys. But I need a little help from my friends! Some of them are also part of other groups. But when we do music together, we are the Soul Tune Allstars.”
