U-Dub's Prog Rock sample for Young M.A’s new Drill track

Young M.A’s “Off The Yak” sees her as hard as ever. But the drill production by U-Dub gives the title track of her upcoming mixtape a much darker edge than other tracks using Tracklib samples, like “Wahlinn.”

“This sample just sounded dark enough to work as a drill beat plus it worked with that tempo,” says New York producer U-Dub, who adds that prog-rock has always been one of his favorite genres to sample. That’s why when Young M.A asked him for a drill production, he dug straight into Tracklib’s prog-rock vaults.

Aria For Italy” is taken from Leonardo - The Absolute Man, which celebrates the greatness of Leonardo da Vinci. The concept album-slash-rock opera by Trent Gardner (keyboard), Wayne Gardner (guitar), Patrick Reyes (bass), Steve Reyes (guitar), and Jeremy Colson (drums) together with eleven singers narrates the life story of the Renaissance man. Including painting the “Mona Lisa,” and a bombastic composition to represent Da Vinci’s prediction that the world will end in the year 4006, in a “universal flood.”

"I liked the dark cinematic feel to it. I thought the unique analog Arp effect was a good ‘ear candy element’ to punctuate the end of each bar.”

—U-Dub

The eerie interlude “Aria For Italy” was exactly the type of dark touch producer U-Dub was looking for. “I liked the dark cinematic feel to it,” he says. “I thought the unique analog Arp effect was a good ‘ear candy element’ to punctuate the end of each bar.” Serving the purpose of drill rap, as opposed to U-Dub’s more oriental takes for “Wahlinn” with Chinese strings and woodwind, and sampling gospel by Fats Domino’s daughter on “No Love,” for Young M.A’s official debut album, Herstory In The Making.
