Black Sugar was a trailblazing Peruvian band formed in Lima in 1970, acclaimed for fusing US funk and soul with Latin rhythms. Emerging during a golden era of experimentation in South America, the group became a cornerstone of Latin funk, blending psychedelic rock, jazz, salsa and Afro-Peruvian traditions into a fresh, urban sound. Their self-titled debut album (1971) and follow-up “Black Sugar II” (1974) showcased virtuosic musicianship, dynamic horn arrangements and socially conscious lyrics, earning them recognition across Latin America and beyond. Led by guitarist Víctor “Coco” Salazar, keyboardist Miguel “Chino” Figueroa and drummer Jorge “Koke” Villanueva, the band achieved cult status for its originality and energy.
