Kings Go Forth was an unlikely and kismet collaboration between producer Andy Noble—owner of Lotus Land Records and general man about town in Milwaukee, Wisconsin—and the late singer Black Wolf, whose bona fides date back to the regional soul act the Essentials (they were on Curtis Mayfield’s Curtom Records in the ’70s). Together with their 10-member, intergenerational soul band, they perfected complex grooves that elegantly highlighted Black Wolf’s high-flying vocals—attracting notable fans like DJ Shadow and Tom Moulton, the man who invented the 12-inch disco track (and also remixed Kings Go Forth’s “Don't Take My Shadow”).
