The Tree People emerged in 1977 in Eugene, Oregon, as a unique acoustic ensemble blending folk, classical, and experimental influences. The group was founded by songwriter and guitarist Stephen Cohen, percussionist and recorder player Jeff Stier, and classical flutist Rachel Laderman, daughter of composer Ezra Laderman. They began performing at local coffeehouses, markets, and festivals, creating a distinctive sound that resonated with the vibrant Eugene arts scene.
