Brass Samples
Brass is the only section on a record that runs out of air. A player gets a few seconds per phrase before they have to stop, which is why horn lines land in short bursts and why arrangers wrote the gaps in deliberately.
Nothing else in an arrangement announces itself the way horns do. One stab on the one and the track lurches forward. Memphis sessions answered every vocal line with two bars of trombone, Fela stacked his section until it pushed back against the drums, and ska put the same instruments on the offbeat for three minutes straight. Brass music has been punctuating records since long before anyone thought to sample it.
Sampling breaks all of that into usable parts. One stab becomes a one-shot you trigger wherever the arrangement needs a shove, brass loops carry a full section for as long as you let them run, and brass instrument sound samples taken off real dates keep the tuning spread of five players who were never quite together. That spread is where the width comes from.
Stax afternoons with the horn section booked for two hours, salsa dates cut in New York, Afrobeat sides from Lagos, big band sessions nobody has reissued since. Plenty of it arrives with stems, so the horns show up without the rhythm section attached. Our Sounds section’s royalty-free brass sample packs need no clearance at all. Our Songs section’s original recordings can be covered by your plan, and both leave you free to release whatever you build out of them.
