Manhattan Production Music is as vibrant as the New York borough the library is named after. Jazz, orchestral music, rock, percussion—the label’s VP, Ron Goldberg, explains why sound quality is evident throughout all genres in their catalog. What was the start of Manhattan Production Music like?

Norman and David Chesky started the company in the 80s. At the time, David was becoming an established jazz and classical artist who had an album on Columbia Records (Rush Hour) and had national TV appearances on shows like the Mike Douglas Show. After producing custom music for advertising, some clients suggested they produce albums that can be specifically used for commercials and sports production where the clients can keep using it and paying needle-drop fees. Thus, Manhattan Production Music was born. Initially with ten vinyl releases. It has since expanded to include ten catalogs and over 40,000 tracks. They have also created two sister companies: hi-res/audiophile labels Chesky Records and HD Tracks.

Manhattan Production Music features a wide array of styles. Do you have any pointers for producers on where to start digging?

Of course, it all depends on what genre the producers are working in. But in general, we have a lot of great orchestral and jazz tracks that can work well for remixes and hybrids. In addition, starting about five years ago we’ve been asking all our artists and composers to include stems of every recording which we release as separate ‘stems albums.’ Ideal to sample for producers!

"Our library is designed to sound like music you would want to listen to at home instead of sounding like standard production music."

—Ron Goldberg, VP of Manhattan Production Music

How does the library of Manhattan Production Music relate to—or differ from—other well-known music libraries like KPM, de Wolfe, or Selected Sound, to name a few?

As part of the Chesky/HD Tracks family, sound quality is what stands out. We use the same producers, engineers, and many times session musicians that play on the Grammy-winning label [Chesky Records] to also work on our library content. In general, the library is designed to sound like music you would want to listen to at home instead of sounding like standard production music. Hence, why our songs also do well in the streaming and download space.

Why have you decided to add Manhattan Production Music’s catalog to Tracklib?

I was fortunate enough to be in the original meetings with the Tracklib creators who wanted Chesky Records because it would be great to have audiophile music for the platform. After a while, a lightbulb went off saying – wouldn’t our production library be perfect for Tracklib? So here we are.
